What this covers

Domain actions carry very different risk. Searching a name changes nothing. Registering or transferring changes who controls the name. Editing DNS changes where your website and email actually go, and takes effect for everyone.

Before you start

Know whether you already own the name, and who holds it today. If the domain currently receives email, know that before you touch DNS.

How to do it

1. Buying a new name: use domain search. Nothing is reserved until you pay.
2. You already own it elsewhere: use transfer. You will need to unlock it at your current registrar and get the authorisation code from them.
3. Pointing an existing name at us without moving it: leave it where it is and change its DNS to point here.
4. ⚠️ Changing MX records moves your email. If mail currently works, changing MX will stop it until the new records are right. Write down the existing values before you change anything.
5. A DNS change can take a little while to reach everyone, so check again after a few minutes rather than changing it twice.
